Since diving into Merch by Amazon last fall, I’ve been hooked on print-on-demand (POD) – the process of uploading designs to products and earning royalties when they sell. By the end of this year, I’ll cross the six-figure mark in royalties, with most gains coming recently. I’ve also expanded my design portfolio to over 25 niches/topics thanks to Merch. Not bad for a side hustle!
I created Passive Shirt Profits for two main reasons:
- Diversification: I want to reduce reliance on unreliable POD income by offering courses and products.
- Market Gap: There’s a lack of resources teaching software skills needed for creating T-shirt designs, so I want to fill that void.
I’ve noticed many Merch sites and courses offer similar content, so my focus is on practical lessons like coming up with creative concepts for various niches and software skills. I gather inspiration from competitor analysis and user comments in private groups and forums.

I Started an Email List Early
I will never launch another site without an email list again. I launched one for this site in 2010—eight years after 2 Create a Website was born! Back then, I didn’t have products to sell, so my list wasn’t as useful as it could be. This time, I jumped on it immediately, and thanks to my private group and podcast, I already have 31 subscribers after just two weeks.
The Podcasting Hype is Real
I launched the PSP Podcast on May 29th without any promotion, and had over 30 downloads and two email subscribers within the first week! That shows people are actively searching for and listening to podcasts about Merch and POD—a great choice for my marketing strategy. After just two weeks, I’ve already seen over 150 downloads!
